What CTC includes

Cost to company (CTC) is what employers quote in offer letters — often as LPA. It typically bundles basic salary, house rent allowance, special allowances, employer contributions to provident fund, gratuity accruals, and sometimes performance or joining bonuses.

Not every rupee in CTC lands in your bank each month. Variable components may pay quarterly or annually. Employer PF is a cost to the company but is not spendable cash for you. Understanding the split prevents sticker-shock when your first payslip arrives.

What take-home subtracts

Monthly in-hand pay usually subtracts employee PF, professional tax (state-dependent), and income tax withheld under your chosen regime. Insurance or meal deductions may also appear if you opted in.

How to decide between two offers

List fixed cash, realistic variable, and expected take-home for each offer. Add commute or relocation costs as monthly outflows. Only then compare brand, learning, and manager quality.

Run both numbers through offer compare side by side. If monthly cash after commute is within a few hundred rupees, optimize for skills and stability. If the gap is large, negotiate or ask HR to clarify the salary annexure before you accept.
