Bear market habits for crypto holders

Past drawdowns do not guarantee recovery. This guide describes holder habits — not predictions about when prices bottom or whether to buy more.

What a bear market feels like

BTC down 50–70%, alts down more, Twitter quiet or angry, and every headline asks if crypto is dead. Holders with a written plan treat this as a regime — not a surprise. Holders without a plan often sell at the worst moment or chase leverage to "make it back." The goal is survival with your thesis intact.

Three jobs in a drawdown

  1. Protect liquidity — Confirm emergency cash outside crypto is untouched. Emergency fund guide.
  2. Protect security — Scams spike in fear. Run your monthly audit — phishing checklist.
  3. Protect the plan — Re-read allocation bands; adjust only on schedule, not on red candles.

Monthly bear-market review (20 minutes)

  • Check portfolio health on dashboard — concentration, not just P&L
  • Compare market regime on market health score
  • Note stable buffer vs target — enough dry powder?
  • Log one sentence: "I will / will not change allocation this month because…"
  • Export trades if tax year active — export habits

DCA in a bear market

Many plans say continue small DCA from salary. Others pause buys until buffers refill. Both can work if written in advance. Mistake pattern: doubling DCA from fear of missing the bottom while emergency fund erodes. Mistake pattern two: stopping forever after one bad month. Pair with DCA guide and max-pain sizing in allocation guide.

What not to do

  • Move entire stack to high-APY locked products you cannot exit
  • Open futures to "hedge" without understanding notional risk — futures education
  • Rotate into illiquid micro-caps because "they already crashed"
  • Check portfolio every hour — increases panic trades

Sentiment without timing

Extreme fear on the Fear & Greed Index is context, not a buy signal. Use it to notice emotional state: if you feel euphoric at Extreme Fear, your plan may already be working. Read Fear & Greed for holders for a calmer framing.
