Emergency fund before crypto investing
Crypto is volatile; life is not optional
Medical bills, job loss, and family transfers happen while BTC is down 40%. Investors who fund crypto from emergency cash often sell at the worst moment. An emergency fund outside crypto — bank savings, liquid stables with clear rules, or both — separates survival money from risk capital.
How many months?
Common starting points:
- 3 months — Dual income, stable employment, low dependents
- 6 months — Single income, freelancer, or high fixed costs
- 12 months — Business owners, commission-heavy pay, caregiving duties
Count essential expenses only: housing, food, insurance, debt minimums — not vacation or optional DCA. Crypto contributions come from what is left after this bucket is full.
Max-pain test
Imagine your crypto sleeve drops 50% tomorrow and stays there 18 months. Would you:
- Need to sell crypto to pay rent? → Allocation too high or emergency fund too low
- Pause DCA but leave holdings? → Usually healthy if plan says so
- Add from salary without touching emergency cash? → You sized risk capital correctly
Pair with how much to invest for sleeve percentages inside the crypto bucket only.
Stablecoins are not a full emergency fund
USDT/USDC on an exchange are more liquid than BTC but still carry platform and depeg risk. Many holders use bank cash for true emergencies and stables for planned crypto operations — DCA dry powder, rebalance ammo. Know which bucket you are raiding.
