Year-end crypto portfolio checklist
Why year-end is different from quarterly review
Quarterly reviews catch drift. Year-end reviews close the books: complete exports, document decisions, reset security habits, and set next year’s bands before January narratives push you into impulsive trades. Block 60–90 minutes; split across two sessions if needed.
Records and tax prep
- Download full-year Binance history — spot, Earn, P2P if used, conversions. Export guide.
- Reconcile missing months — gaps now become audit pain later.
- Note cost basis method — whatever you use, be consistent and document it.
- India holders — review VDA schedules and TDS summaries separately. India VDA basics.
- Flag large disposals — profit-taking, stable swaps, withdrawals to cold storage may all matter depending on jurisdiction.
Portfolio and allocation
- Compare Jan 1 vs Dec 31 weights — which assets drifted furthest from target bands?
- Run a written stress test on current weights — stress test guide.
- Review yield deployments (Earn, staking, any DeFi) — still aligned with liquidity needs?
- Archive your thesis notes: what worked, what you would not repeat.
Security audit (annual)
- Rotate passwords and confirm 2FA on exchange and email.
- Verify API keys are read-only and revoke unused keys.
- Test cold wallet recovery if you have not in 12 months — seed recovery testing.
- Re-read phishing patterns — scam protection guide.
Plan next year (avoid January FOMO)
Write three numbers before New Year: max crypto allocation %, per-asset bands, and monthly DCA cap. If January rallies, your plan already exists — you execute the plan, not the headline. Pair with bull market discipline if momentum returns.
What not to do in December
- Tax-loss harvest without understanding wash rules in your jurisdiction.
- Chase "year-end predictions" with unplanned alt buys.
- Skip exports because "I will do it in March."
