When to move crypto off exchange

Self-custody shifts risk from exchange failure to your backup discipline. This is process education — not a recommendation to withdraw any specific amount.

Why holders split custody

Keeping everything on Binance is convenient for DCA and Earn. Keeping long-term sleeves in cold storage reduces platform counterparty risk. Most serious holders use both: operational balances on-exchange, core holdings offline. The question is not "exchange or wallet" — it is how much belongs in each bucket and when to move it.

Common triggers to withdraw (process-based)

  • Size threshold crossed — Your written plan says cold storage above X% of net worth or above a dollar amount you would regret losing to platform risk.
  • Long-term sleeve — BTC/ETH you will not touch for 12+ months and do not need in Earn.
  • Post-rebalance trim — After taking profit per your bands, move the cold slice before temptation to re-buy. Profit-taking guide.
  • Platform discomfort — Regulatory news, regional access changes, or personal risk tolerance shift — document why you moved.

What usually stays on exchange

  • Stable buffer for DCA and planned rebalances — stablecoin buffer
  • Flexible Earn on operational stables (with eyes open on redemption risk)
  • Small alt positions you review monthly and may trim quickly
  • Anything you will trade or convert within 30 days

Withdrawal checklist

  1. Verify address on hardware wallet screen — not from a pasted DM.
  2. Send a test amount for new addresses.
  3. Match network (ERC-20 vs BEP-20 vs native) — wrong chain = lost funds.
  4. Use whitelist + delay — withdrawal security.
  5. Update inheritance notes and recovery test log — recovery testing.

Visibility after you move coins

Cold storage does not mean invisible allocation. Note moved amounts in your journal; exchange-only dashboards will understate total exposure. Read-only sync still helps for on-exchange sleeves on dashboard. Compare with exchange vs self-custody framework.
