DeFi vs CeFi yield for crypto holders

Yield products can fail, freeze, or be exploited. Higher APY usually means more risk. Not financial advice or a recommendation to use any platform.

Two yield worlds

CeFi yield (centralized finance) — Binance Simple Earn, locked staking, exchange savings programs. You trust the exchange and its counterparties with custody and product design. DeFi yield (decentralized finance) — on-chain lending, liquidity pools, restaking. You trust smart contracts, oracles, and your own wallet hygiene.

Comparison for holders (not yield farmers)

  • Custody — CeFi: assets sit on exchange ledgers. DeFi: you hold keys or use smart wallets; phishing risk rises. Exchange vs self-custody.
  • Liquidity — Flexible Earn redeems fast; DeFi pools may have lock periods, withdrawal queues, or gas costs to exit.
  • Failure modes — CeFi: insolvency, withdrawal pauses, regulatory action. DeFi: exploits, oracle failures, governance attacks, bridge hacks.
  • Complexity — CeFi: one app. DeFi: chains, approvals, impermanent loss, multiple tokens.
  • Tax tracking — DeFi generates many on-chain events; CeFi CSVs are simpler but still need monthly exports.

When CeFi Earn fits holder plans

Stablecoin buffers you may deploy within days, modest APY on BTC/ETH sleeves you will not move for 30–90 days, and situations where you already use Binance for spot and want one dashboard. Start with Earn vs spot framing.

When DeFi might fit (strict conditions)

  1. You understand the protocol’s failure history and can explain impermanent loss in plain language.
  2. Size is small relative to total portfolio — a learning sleeve, not your buffer.
  3. You use a hardware wallet and never approve unlimited token permissions.
  4. You accept that gas and bridge fees eat small positions.

APY discipline: questions before any yield move

  • What am I being paid to risk? (Credit risk, contract risk, lock-up, regulatory risk?)
  • Can I exit in 24 hours if market health turns Stressed?
  • Does this increase concentration in one chain, token, or platform?
  • Did I log the deployment date for quarterly review?
